Hey guys,
I have been working on an updated design which could be industrialized easily. The first solution I found to make things simpler is to use 4.7″ existing displays, as customizing the displays to have neat round corners is the biggest part of the development costs.
But if we use normal displays without hole for the camera, then we need to increase the size of the phone. Which I don’t like as the whole point of OneDevice is to be small. So I came up with an idea of sliding-up, rotating camera. Such that the same camera could be used for both front and rear cameras. Also it would be really easy to take pictures, as sliding up the camera with thumb will launch directly the camera app. It should be even faster than unlocking the phone and opening the camera app on regular phones.
Also it will let us have 2 full 4.7″ display both for front and read displays.
After I got this idea, I found that it would look really awesome with 2 custom made round corner displays without even punched hole or waterdrop hole!
What do you think of that?

January 16, 2020 at 2:42 pm #645Hey Pierre.
I see and i’m okay with this idea.
It seems to be cool.
I may understand that we manually pop up the camera (yes ? i’m still ok) ?
And thanks to that system no risk to break the camera (inside the phone) great.

January 16, 2020 at 4:12 pm #647Yes manually pop the camera. This way there’s no motor, it reduce complexity, cost and potential failures. And on top of that manual means that we can activate the camera by sliding it up. Rather than unlocking phone, then open camera app which will pop up the module.

January 16, 2020 at 6:22 pm #649I really love this idea!
Only one (and good) camera for a double usage and no pin-hole (or whatever similar).Nice!
edit: will that not be too thick to have 2 screens plus camera?

January 17, 2020 at 10:09 am #655@Matuki in my drawing we can do this with a thickness of about 11mm. This if we use LCD. If we can get AMOLED we reduce by about 1mm.
Also I think there is room for improvement of my drawings.
Anyway we will have to have a thicker phone as if we want to fit a nice battery in there we need some space.Making the camera rotating is not so difficult in fact. And as Matuki said, it’s very usefull for videocall.
January 20, 2020 at 12:23 pm #662Sorry Pierre,
But What is the meaning of the red arrow with 90° ?
This is not 180° for the rotating motion ?
January 20, 2020 at 12:29 pm #663Yeah I am wrong it’s 180° not 90° 🙂
January 20, 2020 at 3:15 pm #665Pierre,
Is it possible to place the pop up buton of the camera on the top ?
Put a pushing buton on the top for release the camera / OR push on the camera to release it and push angain on it, to fold it back.
I have a bad feeling of a manual remote on the side of the phone :s (because of the friction in the pockets)
We have to think of eventual bupers or protective cases that may cause difficulties to reach it on the side.
January 21, 2020 at 10:46 am #667That’s a good idea, I have not thought of that. Pushing the camera to make it pop up. A bit like clicky pen mechanism.
I don’t know which would be the most reliable mechanism. For the manual slide button on the side, there might be a problem with dust going inside the phone. This need to be studied furtherApril 17, 2020 at 7:15 pm #1008The camera popup mechanics could be “copied” by yet sold phones models.
Regarding the design its pretty good. Be aware that an user need to rest his finger on the side of the phone, so dont make the bezels too much thin. The Iphone X has a perfect engineered design, you should use that as example and make the border consistant from the bottom to the side to the top.
I advice to make the bottom border without any “gross”. Like you can see on the Iphone x it has bottom and edges perfectly the same. Thats perfect. If you make the border on the bottom side, make it also on the top side, and if it fits a camera why not enlarge it by 1mm and give face id unlock? Do not make it to minimalist. If a camera/speaker/sensor could fit for just 2mm space, Its better to fit it 🙂Anyway the most beautiful phone i had was a nexus 5. Perfect size phone. Despite it being non bezelles.
April 18, 2020 at 1:04 pm #1017April 18, 2020 at 4:09 pm #1021Yes the camera idea can be copied by other companies, but it requires a thickness quite big as you need to have the full camera thickness (about 5mm) inside a module which is between both screens. So overall you need at least 9-10mm thickness for the phone. And currently manufacturers try to keep thickness around 7-8mm. So this camera system actually make sens only in the case of a small phone with dual screen.
Thanks for your drawing. Yes ideally I’d like to reduce the bottom bezel as much as side and top. We’ll do our best on that.
April 25, 2020 at 1:02 pm #1078This is my Xiaomi Mi Mix 2s. YOUTUBE VIDEO LINK
The design of this Phone is unique and if you think about that, the OneDevice is a Mi Mix 2s, but smaller (and 16:9).Could be possible for the COLORS of the phone to make a completely White version? One Black (as render shows) – One White (Like the Mi Mix 2s)
